Prescott prepares to celebrate Earth Day

Some favorite holidays are associated with fireworks, chocolates and presents. Earth Day focuses on selflessly giving back to the environment.

As April 22 approaches, most Prescottonians go about their normal routines without realizing a holiday is coming. Yet for the past 42 years, people around the world have celebrated Earth Day annually every spring.

The City of Prescott will observe Earth Day on Saturday, April 21. The festivities will take place from 10 to 4 pm at the Courthouse Plaza. There will be live performances and various booths promoting art, conservation and alternative transportation.

Prescott College student Matt Wagner spoke of his plans for Earth Day: “My house has a garden that we just started and I will be tending to that.” He and his housemates are planning on growing tomatoes, strawberries, spinach and potatoes.

Like Wagner, you can participate in Earth Day by doing small things around your house, such as gardening, changing your lightbulbs to less energy-consuming compact fluorescents and properly disposing of litter.

If you would like to volunteer and help clean up the community from 9 to 11:30 am this April 21, you can participate in the annual Granite Creek cleanup.

The original purpose of Earth Day was to heighten public awareness about the planet and its needs. Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin senator active in environmental politics in the 1970s, was largely responsible for initiating Earth Day. On the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, Gaylord Nelson said, “We need a whole generation that will end up in all positions of authority … in politics and business and teaching every walk of life, who are conscious of our part in the ecosystem, so we don’t charge off … destroying everything in sight.”
